Rating Scale
My ratings are a measure of quality, based on both the goal of the film and how well does the movie achieve this goal. Thus, for example, comedies are not penalized for a lack of deeper message, and movies are better compared within their own genre or to other similar movies.
- 5/5 Inspiring
To get a 5, a movie must not only be enjoyable and interesting to watch, but must also be emotionally moving. Emotional response is what separates 4′s from 5′s. I preserve a 5-rating for only the most rewarding viewings, though it is often up to my own personal taste. Recommended to anyone. - 4/5 Great
A rating of 4 means that the movie must be very enjoyable, with few faults. Here you will find the best blockbusters, many indie films, and classics. I don’t find much wrong with 4-rated movies, and they should not be viewed as “only” a 4. Recommend to anyone who has an interest in the movie. - 3/5 Alright
These movies aren’t bad overall, but could have been better in a few significant ways. There may be some movies in here that have some great scenes or interesting elements, but as an overall film, it either doesn’t greatly succeed or doesn’t have much ambition. Neither highly recommended nor recommended to avoid. - 2/5 Poor
A rating of 2 means that a movie was not a very good watch. There are several things in the film which could have, and should have been improved. I recommend that you see a better movie than this one, unless you are really think that you will like it. - 1/5 Horrible
Unfortunately, there are some movies which are painful to watch. The way that I decide a movie gets a 1-rating is easy: if I have to skip scenes to make it through the movie, or if I literally have to shut it off… it gets a 1. I don’t recommend these movies to anyone.
